The Art of Pairing Wine with International Cuisine
By Sophie Laurent
Wine pairing doesn't have to be reserved for French or Italian restaurants. With a little knowledge, you can find the perfect bottle to complement any cuisine — from spicy Thai curries to rich Mexican moles.
Thai Cuisine
The bold, spicy flavors of Thai food pair beautifully with off-dry Rieslings and Gewürztraminers. The slight sweetness balances the heat while the acidity cuts through rich coconut-based curries.
Mexican Cuisine
Think beyond margaritas. A crisp Albariño works wonderfully with ceviche, while a bold Malbec stands up to smoky, meaty dishes like barbacoa.
Japanese Cuisine
Sake is the obvious choice, but don't overlook Champagne or sparkling wines. The effervescence and acidity complement the delicate flavors of sushi beautifully.
Indian Cuisine
Aromatic whites like Viognier handle the complex spice profiles of Indian food remarkably well. For richer curries, try a fruit-forward Zinfandel.
